Amazing Opportunities

The last few weeks have highlighted the amazing opportunities provided to the students in our Saint Sebastian’s community. These have been show cased across a diverse range of areas, be they curriculum and classroom learning, student well-being, sport and the celebration of the arts.

In curriculum, students have participated or will participate in the ICAS competitions. ICAS recognises academic performance in a way similar to sports or the arts, with engaging, fun questions which test students’ higher-order thinking skills across a variety of subjects. Thank you to Mr Casey for working with our students to prepare for and implement these tests.

I visited the Year 2 celebration of learning where students shared their learning about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where they had been learning descriptive language to create another character for the story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Mrs McCulloch is working with some of our students to stretch the learning of some of our students within the area of Mathematics. The students are loving being challenged and are learning that learning can be “hard work” and requires effort and practice.

Year 4 have had an amazingly busy few weeks as they have participated in

  • Touch competition – two year 4 teams have competed in an inter school touch competition on Tuesdays after school. Thank you to Mr Casey, Lani Norup and to the parents for getting students to Clairvaux each Tuesday. The students have had a fantastic time and it is wonderful to see them working as a team to compete against the other schools

  • Choral Festival – Year 4 and voluntary Year 5 and 6 students participated to perform with children from other schools in a spectacular night of entertainment last night. The evening showcased a love of music and singing and the talent and diversity of our Brisbane Catholic Education Community. Thank you to Liesl Murray and her colleagues for their efforts over many weeks to put this together. Thank you to parents and families for attending also.

  • Their St Helena Excursion where learnt about life in early Brisbane and the challenges faced by re- offending convicts.

Year 4 and Year 5/6 have experienced school camp where they worked to challenge themselves physically and socially They developed their independence through being away from home, faced physical challenges and faced emotional challenges as they pushed themselves to try activities which were out of their daily comfort zone.

The Athletics Carnival was a wonderful day for students to perform their athletic skills. Well done to the Red team for their win on the day. Thanks to Clare and all staff for their organisation to make this day a success.

The Fathers Day stall provided an exciting opportunity for students to pick a special present for the fathers or father figures in their lives. Many of our parents participated and volunteered to make this a success on the day.  Whilst not a fundraising event, takings on the day were around $1800 raising around $1000 for the PACE committee and students in turn! Thank you!

On Friday of Week 10 – September 13, our guitar and percussion students will be sharing their skills during assembly. Please come along to see the fruits of the amazing work of Kleiton and his students!
